How To Have Daily Devotions

Start with the Right Attitude.
As you ask a blessing over your meal before you eat, so it would be a good rule for you to ask a blessing on the Word before you partake of its heavenly food. So, when you begin your time with God have these attitudes:

Expectancy: Expect to have a good time of fellowship with Him.
Reverence: Prepare your heart by being still before His Majesty.
Alertness: Give Him your best - be wide-awake, thoroughly rested, and alert.
Be Teachable: Come with the purpose of doing anything God asks.

Choose A Consistent Location & Time.
Jesus had a custom of praying in the quiet garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives (Luke 22:39). The place you choose ought to be a quiet and secluded place where you can be alone and undisturbed. Aim to spend not less than fifteen minutes a day with God in your personal devotions. Out of the 168 hours we all have in a week that will only add up to one hour and forty-five minutes. That seems terribly small when you consider that you were created to have meaningful fellowship with God. whether you choose to spend time with the Lord in the morning, afternoon, or evening, remember: (1) Be consistent, (2) Look forward to it, (3) Don't stand Him up.

Read With A Purpose - To Meet With Jesus.
When you are reading the Scriptures ask the Holy Spirit to make you feel that there is something greater than the printed book in front of you. Specifically that Someone greater is with you as you read - Jesus Christ. He leans over you, He puts His finger along the lines, you can see His pierced hand guide you. You must read it as in His presence for it to come alive. So always ask yourself, "How can I get from this text to Jesus Christ?" If you do not find Jesus in the Scriptures than they will be of small service to you, for what did Jesus Himself say? "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me" (John 5:39). Cling to the Scripture. Scripture is not Christ, but it is the clue which will lead you to Him. Follow its leadings faithfully.

Have a Basic Plan.
It's been said, "lf you aim at nothing, you are sure to hit it!" To have a meaningful daily devotions, you will need a plan or some kind of general outline to follow for your quiet time. It could be something as simple as this:

Briefly Pray
Invite Jesus to be with you (Psalm 139:23-24; 119:18).

Praise God
Read a Psalm out loud to God or sing a praise song to get your heart and spirit in an attitude of worship. Daily devotions are a form of worship.

Read the Bible
Read slowly, systematically (not randomly) and read only a small amount. If you are on a Bible in a year reading plan then after you have finished your assigned reading choose a smaller portion of Scripture that you just read to review again more devotionally. You might want to try reading out loud as if the Lord were speaking to you personally.

Meditate
You can meditate on Scripture by reading the passage out loud a few times, asking questions, memorizing a verse, reading in a couple of different translations, paraphrasing it in your own words, and so forth. Talk with God about how this verse relates to your life and how He wants you to practically apply this truth.

Journal
Write down any thought God gives you, as well as any applications.

Close in Prayer
After God has spoken His Word to you; speak to Him. Include times of adoration, worship, thanksgiving, confession, intercession, and petition. Occasionally vary your physical positions in prayer (kneeling/standing). Tell God how you desire to respond to Him today.
